Curriculum at Key Stages 2 & 3
The Mountsandel website provides teachers with a fun, media-rich resource to support the teaching of the World Around Us at Key Stages 1 & 2 and Environment and Society at Key Stage 3. The site provides a truly ‘connected’ learning experience in that it lets children explore aspects of life in the past while developing a greater knowledge of their local environment, as well as gaining an understanding of the work of archaeologists and how we gather evidence. There are a number of activities throughout the resource, including crosswords, wordsearches and quizzes that can be completed by children on their own or integrated into the lesson.
In the teacher section you will find background notes for the subjects covered in the site and an interview with Peter Woodman, the archaeologist who excavated the site in the 1970s. There are also a number of skills-integrated active learning ideas to download, which further explore the topics covered in the site.
The resource is an engaging way to address the contributory elements of The World Around Us or Environment and Society in the classroom. It can also be used to prepare children for a site visit to Mountsandel, ensuring they get the very best out of their trip.
